What is recyclable?

Recycling is regional. Here is what we accept locally.

Aluminum & Steel cans

Aluminum and steel cans can be recycled in the Gallatin County public drop-off bins located throughout Greater Gallatin County and in commingled containers.

They must be emptied of food and liquid. A simple rinse or good shake is fine. You do not need to perfectly clean them.

The labels are easily removed in the recycling process and can be left on.

Appliances

We accept all appliances and will pay you for them as scrap, with the exception of units containing freon. We charge $30 to evacuate the freon.

If the freon has been removed, we will need a copy of the statement from the certified remover.

Batteries

We accept lead-acid batteries. We will weigh them and pay you cash for them.

Cardboard

Cardboard can be taken to one of many public drop-off bins.

NO frozen food cardboard boxes can be recycled – nothing that came into contact with food. Food contaminates the cardboard and frozen food boxes are often lined with plastic or wax, which makes them not recyclable.

It must be flattened. Remove any non-recyclable packing materials from inside the box. Packing tape on the box is fine to leave intact. It is easily removed during the recycling process.

Composting

Although we do not accept compost, you can explore your options below.

• Happy Trash Can

• The City of Bozeman (seasonal)

• YES Compost

Electronics

We do not accept e-waste. The Logan landfill accepts electronics for a fee. Call them at 406-284-4029.

Les Larson will take e-waste, including computer towers, laptops, phones (any kind), microwaves, electrical breakers, cash registers, routers, and modems. No printers or televisions, unless they are flat screen. Call him at 406-595-2219.

Fluorescent bulbs

We do not accept fluorescent bulbs. They contain mercury and special care must be taken for recycling.

You can recycle them for a fee at the Logan Landfill (406) 284-4029.

Glass

Glass is recycled at 357 Recycle Way in Bozeman. It costs $7.00 for the first 50 lbs. and then .10 per lb. thereafter.

Glass is a flat commodity, meaning there is no return on it. The fee helps cover the cost of handling and transportation. Since there is no local demand for crushed glass, it must be shipped out of state. Momentum Recycling in Salt Lake City, UT gets our glass. They recycle it and ship it just down the road to be used in fiberglass insulation.

Glass is inert and can be easily thrown away. However, when we do this, it means you must harvest more minerals from the earth to make new glass bottles. And, using recycled glass instead of virgin materials requires substantially less energy.

It is your choice. What will you do?

Office paper

Mixed office paper can be recycled in the Gallatin County public drop-off bins and in commingle containers.

Accepted: magazines, junk mail, phone books (remove plastic wrapper), office paper, non-plastic mailers. Plastic windows in envelopes are fine, you do not need to remove them. No neon paper.

Plastic

Plastics #1 and #2 bottles are recyclable here in the greater Gallatin Valley. #3-#7 plastics have become less desirable, so they are no longer accepted here.

Other markets may accept additional plastics but we do not generate near the volume of many other markets.

Sidenote:  lids and caps are made of various resins which makes them not recyclable. Once the resins are combined, you can not extract them. You can leave the caps on or throw them away.

Plastic bags

Plastic bags are not accepted at the public drop-off bins. Check with your local grocery store to see if they are accepting them.

Plastic bags should not be recycled unless they are placed in a bin specifically designated for them. If they are mixed with recyclables, when these bags reach sorting facilities, they get caught in the wheels and rollers of the conveyor belts, which requires the facility to stop down while someone dismantles the equipment and manually removes the bags.

Precious metals

We buy various metals such as copper, aluminum, radiators, and scrap metal. We will weigh your items and pay the current market value.

Vehicles

All fluids must be removed. We will weigh it and pay you cash for scrap.
